It’s decades ago, and this seismic research company’s computer room has operation manuals on cumbersome flip racks — and that’s not the only technology that has disappeared in the years since, reports a pilot fish there.

“The computer was huge — think room-size with banks and banks of processor cabinets — with magnetic tapes and a teletypewriter console instead of monitors,” fish says.

“One day the teletype console spit out an error message with no description. I went to the manual racks and flipped pages until I came to that particular error number.

“The description read: ‘The error has been fixed and will no longer occur.’

“Fortunately, we still had an earlier version of the error codes manual, so we could figure out what the problem was!”
